Robert Jones VC
The Grave of Robert Jones, VC
Robert Jones, one of 11 men to be awarded a VC at the battle of Rorke’s Drift in South Africa in 1879 when 150 men successfully defended a mission station against a sustained attack by between 3000 and 4000 Zulu warriors, is buried in St Peter’s churchyard. Born near Abergavenny, he was only 21 when he won his VC. After being discharged from the army he settled in Herefordshire and worked as a farm labourer.
